GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The country’s undeveloped halal industry takes center stage in the Central Mindanao-wide science and technology (S&T) week that started yesterday.
Zenaida P Laidan, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology, told journalists during opening ceremonies here yesterday that S&T are key to developing halal products that meet international quality standards. "The science and technology week aims at creating public awareness on the vital contribution of science, technology and innovation, especially to the development of halal products..." Ms. Laidan said, referring to the regional celebration, dubbed "Beyond Borders: Reaching New Heights Thru S&T." The regional office is putting up a world-class halal scientific laboratory, the first of its kind in the country, in nearby Koronadal City, Ms. Laidan said. The lab will serve as a clearinghouse for halal products, not just from Central Mindanao but also from other parts of the country, before they are sold here and abroad, she added. Fortunato T. dela Peña, DoST Undersecretary for Science and Technology Services, noted separately that "the regional office has made significant strides... in developing stronger local and international linkages and networks to implement the national halal program." -- RSS [More]
