Wild American Jumping Fish Makes Appearance at MIHAS Halal Trade Show

A controversial American jumping fish, the silver carp, will be featured by an American fishery for import at the upcoming MIHAS 2010 show on 23-27 June.

Schafer Fisheries spokesman Michael Grady said the silver carp is easily startled in the Illinois river it is fished from and can jump over three meters in the air when a small motor boat passes by. “When a boater motors by certain points in the river, several dozen silver carp jump out of the water. Boaters are advised to wear helmets and travel in caged boats to avoid injury from the flying fish”, said Grady.

The flying carp is processed by Schafer Fisheries for its boneless meat, which is prized by Jewish people as kosher gefilte fish. This trade has recently slowed due to tariff restrictions placed on the imported fish meat by the Israeli government. To keep trade flowing, Grady contacted Mazhar Hussaini of the American Halal Foundation for help. Hussaini visited the factory and found that Schafer’s processed the carp for its meat while recycling the fish bones into organic fertilizer. He found the fish to be halal and ready for export to Islamic countries. In Malaysia, the clean and tasty fish can be processed into fast food patties, fish balls, chips, eggrolls and other food sources.

Although this American flying fish won’t be seen flying at the MIHAS show, visitors are free to visit with Mr. Grady and view the famed fish in the freezer at Schafer’s booth. Schafer’s Fisheries is a family-owned business established in 1955. They are the largest Midwest USA fishery and own a fleet of large trucks shipping to all points of the country. Besides Israel, containers are typically shipped to several countries in Europe, and to Singapore.
